Officials moot bringing smaller hotels under ambit of 'code'

PANAJI: Representatives of starred hotels were of the view that the smaller hotels, lodges and rooms-for-hire should also be mandatorily covered by the code of conduct for safe and honourable tourism.
Training manager of Zuri Hotels Rajah Swamidoss said that law enforcement is stricter in other countries, so tourists feel that India is a place where nefarious activities are tolerated.
He also pointed out that "contact numbers of escorts or prostitutes are advertised on social networking sites".

Roque D'cruz, principal of the Institute of Hotel Management (IHM), Porvorim, said the IHM is ready to train and sensitize workers in the hospitality sector.
Ralph D'souza, spokesperson of Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) said "Why should our citizens be compromised? We should not forget other sectors where sex crimes are committed." He said hawkers on beaches actually indulge in nefarious activities such as selling drugs or supplying prostitutes on the sly.
"We have to safeguard the name of Goa, as one bad example portrays you in a totally different dimension," he concluded.
